THE SEMINARIANS PROJECT

One More Soul has always had a policy of giving free copies of "Contraception, Why Not?" to any seminarian who requested it. Without really trying to contact seminarians, we were able to distribute over 500 copies of "Contraception, Why Not" to seminarians in 1996. However, we felt that a more thorough method of distribution was called for. After all, these young men were holding the future of our Church in their hands.

 

In 1996 the tape of "Contraception, Why Not" was already having a huge effect. One priest who received a copy of "Contraception, Why Not" while still in seminary called us

In August 1998, on the Feast of the Assumption, we sent letters to the rectors of every seminary in the United States inviting them to take advantage of our offer of a free copy

of “Contraception: Why Not” for each of their seminarians. That year we were privileged to send out over 800 audio tapes. We were also very pleased and grateful to those who

helped fund the 1998 offering.

 

Over the years we have tried a variety of strategies for acquainting seminarians with “Contraception: Why Not.” The talk has been reformatted and put on CD, and currently we are making an effort to contact all US seminaries, asking for permission to send enough copies of “Contraception: Why Not” (and also Patty Schneier’s talk, “’Prove It, God’…And He Did”) so that every seminarian could have one of each.

 

Priests have found it very difficult to promote the Church’s teaching on marriage and family life, particularly the importance of avoiding contraception. Part of the problem is the lack of good supportive material that can help the parishioners understand why the Church’s way offers so much more than the alternatives. We can do a great service to our future priests by giving them right now what they will need in their ministry.
