Since 2022, when Roe v. Wade was overturned, abortion has been banned or severely restricted in approximately half of U.S. states. While these protections for unborn children are encouraging, access to medication abortion—the so-called “abortion pill”—has expanded significantly.

According to the Guttmacher Institute, medication abortion accounted for 63% of all abortions in the United States in 2023, representing a substantial increase from previous years. In states where abortion is banned throughout pregnancy, medication abortion obtained through telehealth has also become an increasingly common way for women to obtain abortions, in some cases more frequently than traveling to another state. This expansion of access can allow abortion to take place at home with limited or no in-person medical supervision, potentially leaving women without immediate medical support if serious complications arise. It may also create additional opportunities for coercion and exploitation, particularly for women who are vulnerable to abusive partners or human trafficking.

Although mifepristone and misoprostol are widely promoted as “safe” and “effective,” emerging research has raised important concerns about the potential risks and complications associated with medication abortion. One large study reported that nearly 11% of women who underwent medication abortion required emergency-room care or hospitalization. Other reports have raised concerns about whether the risks and adverse effects associated with these medications have been adequately recognized and communicated.

A recent article published by the Population Research Institute reported the story of Holly Patterson, an 18-year-old who tragically died from complications following a medication abortion. The author of the article mentioned that safety concerns existed from the drug’s earliest development, including warnings about infection, bleeding, drug interactions, and risks for women with certain health or nutritional conditions. It highlights a 2025 analysis of 865,727 mifepristone abortions, which reported that 10.93% of women experienced a serious adverse event within 45 days, including infection, sepsis, and hemorrhage, compared with the lower rate reported on the FDA label. The analysis also reported a real-world abortion failure rate of at least 5.26% and concluded that 13.51% of women experienced either a serious adverse event or a repeat abortion attempt.

These findings underscore the need for continued, transparent, and unbiased evaluation of medication abortion and its effects on women’s health.

   welcome, cherish, and safeguard God’s most precious gift of life. Help us to faithfully
   commit ourselves to the service and defense of human life — especially where it is vulnerable
   or threatened. Obtain for us the grace to do the will of God in all things. Amen. 
2. Take action and tell the pharmacies and pharmaceutical companies that are involved to stop selling the abortion pill.
3. Raise awareness about abortifacient pills. This message is about the use of mifepristone, for abortion.
